The distant chorus of Happy Birthday serenaded us as we passed the lively Kokomo bar on the way to our table. The celebratory dozen of friends and family were ending their evening as we ordered two signature cocktails. On the recommendation of our server, we ordered a Good Vibez and a Pain Killer and noted that the frozen Dusse Colada and Good Guice Rum Punch sounded like the perfect summer refreshers.
The cocktails opened our senses to the tastes of the Caribbean. Coconut curry mussels, jackfruit taco, and scrumptious flatbreads topped with island staples like ackee, grilled shrimp, and scotch bonnet sauce are all tempting starters. We enjoyed the savory Wild Mushroom and Truffle Flatbread, richly complete with vegan cheese. The menu includes traditional favorites like jerk chicken, oxtail, Chicken and Waffle, and an array of seafood dishes flavored with curries, island spices, tropical fruit accents, Trinidadian ginger, and Jamaican preparations.
At a corner table, we noticed a very striking couple enjoying a romantic dinner. Soon a surprise Happy Birthday serenade for the gentleman elicited smiles and nods from all the diners around the room. Two celebrations on a Tuesday! Kokomo serves traditional dishes, prepared without the fear of flavor (…americanization) while including innovative interpretations of island cuisine. The cuisine at Kokomo is the taste of home and heritage for many that make their way to Williamsburg for special occasions. The warm ambiance and hip staff add to an evening’s appeal. for a special occasion and a treat to sense for demanding New York City diners. Kokomo NYC.
