When a special invite lands in your inbox, you can’t help but grin. This BMW invitation wasn’t about being the first to drive something new—it was about experiencing something not yet destined for production, a showcase of pure driving pleasure. The BMW Vision Driving Experience went beyond expectations, offering a ride in a high-performance test vehicle that pushes the very limits of BMW’s mission.
Referred to by BMW as the “Heart of Joy,” this prototype was pushed to its limits at the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg, SC. There, BMW provided us with exclusive insights into its development program, showcasing how this cutting-edge technology will shape the electric driving experience of the Neue Klasse—a ride that will fully embrace the Heart of Joy.
level, but another one beyond that,” says Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Development. “In addition, we are further increasing efficiency and therefore boosting range, as in future the driver will brake almost exclusively using energy regeneration. This is Efficient Dynamics squared.”
The technology behind the Heart of Joy is nothing short of extraordinary. Its control unit manages the drivetrain, brakes, charging, recuperation, and steering functions, processing information ten times faster than previous systems. Working in sync with BMW’s Dynamic Performance Control software, the Heart of Joy recalibrates driving dynamics with unprecedented speed and precision.
In the BMW Vision Driving Experience test vehicle, the Heart of Joy’s performance is visually showcased through dynamic color displays on the wheels—green for acceleration, blue for energy recuperation, and orange for braking using friction brakes. A brilliantly intuitive way to see cutting-edge engineering in action.
