Jil Sander, a brand synonymous with minimalist luxury since its founding in 1968, has been continually redefined by its creative directors, Luke and Lucie Meier since they took the helm in 2017. Under their guidance, the brand’s signature sharp tailoring has softened, introducing a modern, emotionally resonant approach to minimalism.
For the Fall/Winter 2024 collection, the Meiers curated a world where models walked a sage green carpet winding through a fully sage room among horn sculptures in royal blue. The collection was a masterclass in comfort and protection, reflecting Lucie Meier’s guiding question: “Who doesn’t like comfort?”
Oversized silhouettes and rounded edges dominated, with the tailoring notably devoid of hard lines. While Jil Sander’s 1990s aesthetic was minimal and sharp, this collection embraced curves, from the shoulders and sleeves of swishy suits in red, celadon green, and chocolate brown, to cape coats with infinity hems. These soft, flowing forms provided a welcome contrast to the starker grays and blacks seen elsewhere in fashion.
Rich textures enhanced the collection’s sense of nestling and cocooning. Diamond quilting and the tactile quality of openwork crochet in bouclé wool and mohair offered a dreamy, wearable experience. Knit pieces that could be reversed to reveal a shearling-like texture further blurred the silhouette and softened the lines. The quilted-down coats and layer-able knitwear were contrasted with glimmering statement jewelry and mohair accessories, to create a visually striking swath.
The Meiers collection conveyed a serene sense of protection and ease – enveloping luxury and comfort with color and verve.
