Visiting an exceptional winery is a consummate luxury. Founded in 1996, the Abadía Retuerta Estate occupies over 1,700 acres just outside the border of the Ribera del Duero region in Spain’s north central province of Castilla y León, near the village of Sardón del Duero. The estates 500 acre winery was designed by the technical advisor for the estate and famous French oenologist, Pascal Delbeck. Abadía Retuerta takes it names from the combination of two words that describe the region, Rívula (river bank) and Torta (twisting, winding). Visitors will find a fabulous mix of tradition and modernity at Abadía Retuerta Estate which is one of the most advanced wineries in Europe. Currently, Angel Anocíbar Beloqui (PhD in oenology and Ampelography from the University of Bordeaux and International Wine Challenge 2005 Winemaker of the Year) coordinates the entire process, from the vine to the bottle.
For guests staying at the spectacular Le Domaine, a tour of the Abadía Retuerta Estate will further enrich his or her vacation experience and for anyone visiting the region a visit to the Estate is a must. Our guide Raphael showed up in a Land Rover Defender and gave us a quick tour of the grounds and showed us some vines that are over 100 years old. We were whisked to a nearby hilltop plateau to gain a sweeping overview of the Estate, which includes the 12th century abbey, which is now part of Le Domaine, while our guide explained the rich history of the region. During our tour Raphael expressed “It is our duty to respect and preserve the legacy we have inherited, our surroundings, the monastery and its wines to return what we can to the earth, enhancing and increasing what we have so generously been given. With a natural terrain that affords the winery the opportunity to cultivate a variety of grapes, grown at varying altitudes, and in different soil types, they are able to select the very best grapes in the creation of their acclaimed signature wines.
For starters I suggest you visit your local wine shop and pick up Abadia Retuerta Seleccion Especial Sardon De Duero 2012 then plan a visit to see how it is made. Abadia Retuerta Experiences
